| Gene Baker’s Haywire Guitar Gene loves ash white blondes and butterscotch. As far as the pickups he always goes for the hum canceling stacks like the DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Area T neck and Hot Area T bridge in this Tele Custom built for him by Haywire. The strings are his favorite- DiAddario XL 10's. Gene likes nickel hardware, maple necks, Fenders 10/56 is about his favorite-a soft V .890 to .980 with Dunlop 6105 tall Stainless steel skinny wire. Glendale makes a great all stainless steel Tele bridge and the reverse T bridge with Danny Gatton compensating saddles was what he liked. Gene wanted reverse controls, 4 way switch towards jack end with one of the selections both pick ups in series, standard action, 9.5 radius+soft "V" neck profile and a black dot maple neck. He asked me to fill in the artistic blanks. I added the Laser Engraved neck plate, The uncut version of the Tele pick Guard as it was intended to be by finishing the radius on the left hand side, as well as the Red Pearl knobs to match the guard. |
| When I first met Gene back in 1986 near Santa Barbara, CA he had not yet started work for Fender or Gibson nor had he begun his Baker guitar Company. He was a great player and a great guy. He built me a guitar gratis that I still play to this day. Gene enlightened me as to how a guitar should play. I never forgot what he showed me. This guitar was built for Gene gratis by me at the Haywire Custom Shop for his inspiration and friendship over the years. He's still a great guy and a great player! ....Rick |
